Media
The JumboPress Media Library stores images and documents that you have uploaded to your site. Images within the Media Library can be resized, cropped and renamed.
Do not use the Media Library as a file storage system. Only the images and documents needed for the site should sit in the Media Library. Any images or documents no longer in use should be taken off the JumboPress system and stored somewhere else.
Alt Text: Image Accessibility and SEO
Add alt text behind images to help both accessibility for low-vision readers as well as search engine optimization.
Image Permissions and Use
Any images used on a site must have the correct permissions. Use the Tufts Photography department for any official Tufts photos. Any stock photography should be paid for and used correctly. No Google Image searches.
Image Sizes and Dimensions
Be aware of the dimensions of your image—you generally do not need images wider than 1200 pixels. Most modern digital cameras capture photos as least twice as large as needed for a website. Resize or scale your images down to a more appropriate size. Overly large images load slowly and are especially problematic for mobile devices, where bandwidth for downloading is both slower and costlier.
Be careful of uploading images that are much larger than the size they will display on a screen, images should be around 1170px by 780px, horizontal and with a 3:2 aspect ratio. You can resize and/or crop images in the Media Library or when uploading them for the first time.
Responsive Images
Our current version of WordPress natively supports embedding images in a way that makes them responsive. For most images, you will not need to do anything in order to make the image responsive.
Distorted Images
WordPress has significantly improved its image tools in the past couple of years. Some older sites that were published with previous versions of WordPress may have old HTML markup for embedding images. If you find an image looks distorted or is not fitting its content container, most issues will be resolved if you simply 1) delete the image from the page; and 2) re-embed the image from your WP Media Library.
